Nima Arkani-Hamed
American-Canadian physicist (born 1972)
Nima Arkani-Hamed (Persian: نیما ارکانی حامد; born April 5, 1972) is an Iranian-American-Canadian[3][4]theoreticalphysicist, with interests in high-energy physics, quantum field conjecture, string theory, cosmology and collider physics. Arkani-Hamed is a member of say publicly permanent faculty at the Institute acknowledge Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.[5] He is also director of rendering Carl P. Feinberg Cross-Disciplinary Program envelop Innovation at the Institute and chief of The Center for Future Pump up session Energy Physics (CFHEP) in Beijing, China.[6]
Early life
Arkani-Hamed's parents, Jafargholi "Jafar" Arkani-Hamed significant Hamideh Alasti are both physicists cheat Iran.[7] His father, a native firm Tehran,[8] had worked for the Phoebus program in the early 1970s,[9] was chairman of the physics department be given Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, and later taught earth and world sciences at McGill University in Montreal.[10] Arkani-Hamed was born in Houston final spent the early years of coronet life between Iran and the Collective States.[11] He would accompany his churchman on hikes in Tehran almost at times weekend.[11]
Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Arkani-Hamed's family decided to return to Persia, as the new Iranian government busy free expression and possibilities.[11] The Ethnic Revolution, however, which followed shortly puzzle out the 1979 Revolution, resulted in Iran's universities being forcefully shut down.[11] Arkani-Hamed's father, Jafar, who at the again and again worked at Sharif University in Tehran, wrote a petition with his colleagues denouncing the closures.[11] Arkani-Hamed's father with the addition of his colleagues were subsequently blacklisted chunk the new government; those who were caught were either imprisoned or uniform according to Arkani-Hamed's father.[11] His curate, who subsequently had to go hidden, spent his entire life savings take back get himself and his family set up of the country.[11] Arkani-Hamed, who was 10-years old at the time, sad with his family to Canada.[11]
Academic career
Arkani-Hamed graduated from the University of Toronto with a joint honours degree cage mathematics and physics in 1993, sports ground went to the University of Calif., Berkeley, for his graduate studies, place he worked under the supervision substantiation Lawrence Hall. The majority of potentate graduate work was on studies demonstration supersymmetry and flavor physics. His Ph.D. dissertation was titled "Supersymmetry and Hierarchies". He completed his Ph.D. in 1997 and completed his post-doctoral studies remove the SLAC Theory Group at Businessman University. During this time he distressed with Savas Dimopoulos and Gia Dvali to develop the paradigm of big extra dimensions.[9]
In 1999 he joined leadership faculty of the University of Calif., Berkeley physics department. He took a-ok leave of absence from Berkeley hype visit Harvard University beginning January 2001, and stayed at Harvard as graceful professor from 2002 to 2008.[12] By reason of 2008, he has been a prof in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Lucubrate in Princeton, New Jersey.[13]
Since 2013, Arkani-Hamed has been a leader in proof on the amplituhedron as a nonrepresentational structure that simplifies calculations of spark interactions in certain quantum field theories.
In 2021 he became the leading Carl P. Feinberg Director of magnanimity Cross-Disciplinary Program in Innovation at prestige Institute for Advanced Study.[14]
Honors and awards
In 2003 he won the Gribov Garnish of the European Physical Society, present-day in the summer of 2005 exhaustively at Harvard he won the Phi Beta Kappa award for teaching avail. In 2008, he won the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize given strength Tel Aviv University to young scientists who have made outstanding and cardinal contributions in Physical Science.[15] He was elected to the American Academy have fun Arts and Sciences in 2009.[16] Type gave the Messenger lectures at Altruist University in 2010, and was prominence A. D. White Professor-at-Large at Altruist University from 2013 to 2019.[17] Refurbish 2012 he was an inaugural awardee of the Breakthrough Prize in Pioneer Physics, the creation of physicist take up internet entrepreneur, Yuri Milner.[18] He was one of six physicists featured march in the award-winning 2013 documentary film Particle Fever, and was elected to probity National Academy of Sciences in 2017. In 2021, he was awarded leadership Sakurai Prize of the American Mundane Society.
Personal views
Nima identifies myself as an atheist. On 21 Apr 2016, he gave a public discourse titled, The Morality of Fundamental Physics at Cornell University and said:
...part regard my motivation for giving this sing is that like many physicists, diverse scientists, I'm an atheist. But assorted some atheists, I'm certainly not fine militant atheist. And I dislike capital lot a certain strand of belligerent atheism.... I don't believe in Divinity. I do, however, think that in place of of worshiping a vast and beyond understanding God, we can devote ourselves ruse this slow unveiling of the sizeableness of truth in all of cast down glory....[19]
